Review of the Day

Keane Retires From Playing

The man who supported 100 clubs growing up, judging by the fact that he always said he supported every club he signed for, Robbie Keane has retired from playing about 5 years after I thought he had retired. Keane went from Crumlin United to English football as a youngster, where he made his name and earnt big money moves to Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, Inter Milan, Celtic and Liverpool. In recent years he has been in MLS with LA Galaxy and ATK, where he moved into management. Keane's announcement read: "Today, after 23 wonderful years, I am formally announcing my retirement as a professional footballer. From Crumlin United around the world to the likes of Milan, London and Los Angeles, I could never have imagined the path my football life would take. It has exceeded all the hopes I had as a football-mad boy growing up in Dublin. Leaving home at 15 years of age to pursue my professional career in England seems a lifetime ago now. I was a street footballer full of hope armed with huge ambitions and a determination to succeed. All I needed was that one chance. I would like to pay a special thanks to Wolverhampton Wanderers for believing in me and giving me that chance. From Wolves, my professional career followed a path that took me far and wide, giving my family and I the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people and experience several different countries and cultures. Playing and captaining my country has been the highlight of my career. I enjoyed every moment of the most incredible journey with the Ireland team over an 18-year period and as I have said many times before, words cannot express how proud I am to be Irish. I hope I have made the fans proud wearing the green jersey and armband."

Gracia Signs Long Term Hornets Deal

Watford manager Javi Gracia has signed a new long term deal with the Hornets. The Spaniard had initially signed an 18-month contract with them when appointed, which is a long time for a Watford manager to survive under the Pozzos, but has now signed until 2023. Gracia is the 4th manager at the Hornets since they achieved promotion in 2015.

United No Longer To Be Feared Says Targett

Southampton youth academy graduate Matt Targett has said that he believes the fear factor has vanished from facing Manchester United, who have already lost 4 Premier League games this season. Targett said: "The fear factor has definitely gone. You can see how they have played recently. They have still got unbelievable talent but defensively I think they have problems. It is a big game, they are struggling. It is not like the old Man United.. I think we can get at them and hopefully we can start turning things around. Any home game you have to be positive. We haven't done that enough this season. It will be a good chance to start on Saturday. It would do us the world of good and get the fans back on our side."

Success To Remain With Watford

Watford's Nigerian striker Isaac Success has signed a new 5 year contract. The 22 year joined from the then-Pozzo owned Spanish side Granada in 2016 and has made 35 appearances so far, though he did spend the second half of last season on loan at Malaga.

United Extend De Gea Deal

Spanish international goalkeeper David de Gea has had the one-year club option in his contract triggered by Manchester United to ensure his deal does not end in the summer. He will now be out of contract in the summer of 2020, with both parties still attempting to sort out a long term extension.

Libertadores To Be In Madrid

The second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate will now take place in the Bernabeu in Madrid. The South American equivalent to the European Champions League will now be played in Europe on Sunday 9th December. River were fined over £300,000 after the violence but an appeal to have the match awarded to Boca was rejected.

Pellegrini Tells Oxford He Is Unwanted

Reece Oxford was once West Ham United's youngest Premier League player, bursting onto the scene with an impressive performance against Arsenal in 2015. The 19 year old has since faded out of the first team picture with a couple of loan spells at Reading and Borussia Monchengladbach failing to help his progress. Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini has told Oxford that he probably needs to leave the club. Pellegrini said: "A player who is 19 or 20 must be ready to play in the first team. If you don't have the space you must go to another club. We have in his position a player who I am happy with. Angelo Ogbonna is also on the bench, but working very well every day. Issa Diop is playing well, and while Declan Rice doesn't play in that position, he can. So, we will see what happens with Reece, whether he stays here, or if it is better for him to go and play for another team."

Pires Rejected For Arsenal Role

Robert Pires has revealed that he was rejected for a coaching role under Unai Emery with former club Arsenal because they already had Steve Bould. Not sure I understand that thinking personally, I would have thought there was plenty of space for more coaches at the top level. Pires said of the rejection: "Yes, this is true. My plan was to work with him on the staff because I know the club, I know the players. For me, it would be interesting to work with him because I know his philosophy. I know he is a very good manager. I want to learn. For now, I don't want to be a manager because I think it is a very good job but it is too tough. You have a lot of responsibility. Maybe it was a good start like this to work with him on the staff. That is why I sent a message to Unai Emery and Unai Emery replied to me and said, 'Yeah, but we need to talk with the club.' The club said 'Maybe it is a good idea but we already have Steve Bould.' So I said, 'No problem, I respect your decision.' Maybe one day, I hope."

PSG Player Robbed While On The Pitch

Former Stoke City forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting returned home from playing the last 25 minutes for new club Paris Saint-Germain to find his apartment had been robbed of around £500,000 of items, mainly jewellery and handbags. Half a million! They would have had to take the apartment I live in as well to get anywhere near half a million in value. It really does make you wonder about the game when even a no-mark like Choupo-Moting has that much just in goods at home! However no one should have to come home to find their home robbed, it is very invasive and makes you feel unsafe in your own home.

PSG Charged Over Fireworks

UEFA have charged PSG with "setting off fireworks" during the Champions League win over Liverpool on Tuesday. The Qatari-owned club will face a hearing on 13th December.

Former International Accused Of Threatening To Shoot Actor

Former USA international Jermaine Jones, who retired from playing this year, has been accused of stalking an actor and singer called David Charvet and threatening to shoot him with an assault rifle over Jones' belief Charvet was having an affair with his wife. Jones split up with his wife after 11 years of marriage and is seemingly holding Charvet responsible. Charvet has since been given a restraining order against Jones, forbidding him from coming within 100 yards of Charvet. Though, if he is a good shot, I am not sure that will make much difference to a guy with an assault rifle!
