Review of the Day

Contracts

Real Sociedad left-back Kevin Rodrigues has agreed a contract extension. The 24 year old is now contracted until 2022. Young French defender Robin Le Normand also agreed a new deal which runs until 2022.

Also in Spain, Real Zaragoza goalkeeper Alvaro Raton has a new deal which expires in 2023.

Veteran Scottish full back Ricky Foster has agreed a year's extension to his St Johnstone contract. His previous deal expired in the summer, but he will now be tied down until 2020.

Transfers

Bologna's Nigerian left winger Orji Okwonkwo has headed to Major League Soccer on loan. The 21 year old will spend the 2019 MLS season with the Montreal Impact.

Irish midfielder Chris McCann has joined DC United on a free transfer. The 31 year old was previously at Atlanta United.

Scholes Expects Mourinho Criticism

New Oldham Athletic manager Paul Scholes is expecting Jose Mourinho to be ready to jump in and give him criticism after Scholes was extremely vocal in his criticisms of Mourinho during his time in charge of Manchester United. Scholes, who has now swapped the pundit's chair for the managerial hotseat, said: "I think he will be watching results. Whether he will be watching the games I am not too sure. That is part of the thing that bugged me a little bit. I wanted to get into it (management) anyway but I have left myself wide open. I have been quite critical. I don't think we will get many pundits watching - (although) if we are losing games I am sure people will be popping up - can say what they want. I have never really understood why players and managers take notice of what pundits say anyway. They are just giving an opinion on the game and get paid for doing so. If anyone wants to have a dig at me, I won't be taking any notice. The only person I answer to is the owner."

Lambert Charged With Misconduct

Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has been charged with misconduct by the FA after his sending off against Norwich City at half time of an Old Farm derby his team lost 3-0. Both he and Norwich coach Chris Domogalla were sent off in the 45th minute and both clubs have also been charged with failing to control their players and officials in an orderly fashion for that incident and one in the 90th minute as well. Lambert's sending off happened after Ipswich midfielder Jon Nolan fouled Norwich full-back Max Aarons. The aftermath saw Lambert needing to be restrained by stewards and a police officer, as he shouted threats of violence towards Domogalla, who had clearly said something to upset the Scot. Domogalla was also sent off for his part in the affair. An incident in the 90th minute once again began with an Ipswich player fouling a Norwich player and the players had to be separated. No Ipswich coaches were sent off, possibly because Lambert had parked them all in front of the Ipswich goal. I know, bad joke but I couldn't resist!

St Mirren Disgust At Utterly Unacceptable Conduct Of Their Own Fans

St Mirren have warned that they will be looking to give lifetime bans to their fans who spat and threw coins at an unconscious Dundee United supporter. The Dundee United fan suffered a serious head injury in a crush after they scored their first goal in a 2-1 Scottish Cup win. St Mirren have revealed that they are also facing other problems with a hooligan element and the police: "have been in dialogue with us over some incidents and behaviour that has taken place predominantly at away games. This relates to a very small number of fans, however, it goes without saying that this negatively affects the reputation of the support as a whole. Amongst other things this has involved the setting off of flares, fireworks and smoke bombs, organising fights with opposition supporters and vandalism of public property. These are very serious allegations and seriously tarnish our club's reputation."

Johnson Gets Two Match Ban

Hibernian defender Darnell Johnson has been punished with a two game ban for his challenge on Celtic full-back Emilio Izaguirre, which saw the Honduran stretchered off the pitch. 20 year old Johnson was making his Hibs debut at the start of a loan spell from Leicester City.

Celtic Announce Half-Season Profits

Despite a 30% drop in revenue, Celtic have announced a net profit of £15.2m for the first half of the season. The Glasgow giants failed to make the group stages of the Champions League this time around, which saw revenue drop markedly, but the sale of Moussa Dembele to Lyon for nearly £20m helped them achieve the profit. Celtic's chairman Iain Bankier said: "Entirely in line with our trading seasonality, we do not expect the same level of financial performance to be achieved during the second half of the financial year. This is due to participating in fewer home fixtures and receiving lower income from European competition. However, due to the positive first-half performance of football, media and merchandise sales, the expectation is to achieve a full-year profit after tax marginally above previously communicated market expectations, with year-end net cash at bank expected to be lower than December, reflecting the increased investment into football personnel." Celtic made 7 January signings, which included 3 loan deals.

Father And Son Duo Charged By Police

A father and son ejected from Brighton & Hove Albion's stadium on Saturday have been charged, after stewards threw them out due to reports of racist language. The duo, who were with Burnley's travelling support and hail from Burnley have been bailed to appear before Brighton magistrates on 14th March. The father, Stewart Higgins, 53, was charged with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour. While his 18 year old son Nathan has been charged with the same offence and with using racially aggravated threatening or abusive words or behaviour.

Antonio Calls For Points Deductions For Racial Abuse

Following fans from his own team, West Ham United, being caught racially abusing Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah on camera, Michail Antonio has called for points deductions for teams whose fans are found guilty of racial abuse at games. Antonio said on TV: "Finding an individual does nothing. That one person, he gets banned for life but no-one has a picture of his face. He can get back into the stadium. If you start playing games behind closed doors and deducting points, then the problem is inside themselves, they're going to deal with it themselves. If you affect their team, the fans, his friends, are going to turn on him. I would blame the FA and Uefa because I don't feel like they're strict enough when it happens. If they want to hammer down on it next season, it could take five or 10 years. If they keep thinking of other solutions rather than just hitting it straight on the head, then it could take generations."

Hitzlsperger Gets Sporting Director Role

Former Everton, West Ham United and Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has been appointed sporting director at Stuttgart. The 36 year old former Germany international replaces Michael Reschke at the struggling Bundesliga side, after Reschke was sacked with the team sat in a relegation play-off place. Hitzlsperger had been working as a pundit on German TV.

Goalkeeping Great Passes Away

Legendary England World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has passed away at the age of 81. Banks, who played for Chesterfield, Stoke City and Leicester City, picked up 73 England caps and 6 FIFA goalkeeper of the year awards in a career that has become defined by one of, possibly even the, best saves of all time as he flew across the goal to keep out a header from Pele in the 1970 World Cup. It is a widely held belief that he is the greatest goalkeeper of all time, something that is difficult to argue against, but he is probably better remembered by all that met him as a genuinely nice guy. R.I.P.

Dortmund's Flight Delayed By Sancho

Exciting young English winger Jadon Sancho has finally shown a weakness in his game - his memory. The 18 year old arrived at Dortmund airport, to fly to London with the Borussia Dortmund team for their Champions League game against Tottenham Hotspur, when he realised he had forgotten his passport. The flight's departure was delayed while he went back home to fetch his passport.
