Thoughts on What Manchester United Should Do in the Summer Transfer Window

Well, wasn't a great surprise the result today between Manchester United and Cardiff City. The 0-2 loss to Cardiff even with United having over 70% possession was again no real surprise. The management from the top executive to the first team coaching has been appalling for years and we've been steadily in decline. I disliked Jose Mourinho as our coach, but at least he brought an element of over achieving as Sir Alex Ferguson had done many a season.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskaer it's been tough, he is a good man and has a decent coaching team around him, but where is the fire? Who is able to get the team fired up? The first team is devoid of motivation and clearly lacking leaders. Pogba, Lingard and others are approaching their peak years, yet dance around like children. I know the game is supposed to be fun, but seriously get the basics correct first.

The club must move out as many of the people being carried by the useful ones. I think Lindelof, Shaw and Fred have all shown enough this season to remain.

If David de Gea wishes to leave this summer, the club should grant him his wish. He has served the club well, although his form dipped this season. Romero is a better than decent back up and may well perform as first team keeper. Either have faith in Henderson as competition and back up for Romero or move Romero out and buy a keeper for the next 5-7 years, therefore ruling out Henderson.

With the defence; in my opinion, Bailey, Rojo, Valencia, Young, Smalling, Darmian should all be phased out and moved on. I'm one of the few who would persevere with Jones as a squad member as he has ability when fit. Dalot, Shaw, Lindelof, Tuanzebe are a group of youngsters that could be used as a basis to build around, this has to be addressed during the coming transfer window.

The midfield similar to the defence; Herrera has moved on, hopefully Paul Pogba follows suit. I'd also try to find a buyer for Matic. Whilst Mata is a good man, he isn't necessarily what Manchester United need so should have his hand shaken and wished the best for his future career. Mctominay and Andreas Pereira should have the 2019/20 season to develop and be reassessed in 12 months. I hope Fred continues to settle and can play a squad role moving forward.

Clearly, Sanchez and Lukaku should also be moved on if buyers and the difficulty surrounding wages allows. The press reporting that United need 7 to 8 senior players isn't far off the mark. Probably should be the minimum for this summer alone (fans view). Is this likely to happen in reality with the lack of cohesion in transfer strategy over the past few seasons and clear mis-use of funds?

I'd love the club to invest in youth and go out and sign young athletic players in the mould of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dias, Tierney, Rice, Ndombole, Fernandes, Felix, Sancho, Jovic and add these to the youth coming through the system. I have little faith though right now that we could either attract such players or even identify them in the first place.

Still, United for 40 years and will never walk away.
