Injury Round-Up

Newport County have lost defender Mickey Demetriou for around 14 weeks after he suffered a broken fibula. The 28 year old was stretchered off during the weekend's win over Plymouth Argyle. Newport manager Michael Flynn said: "It's a massive setback because Mickey has played every game for the last two seasons. He has had an operation - he has had a plate put in. The timeframe is between 10 and 14 weeks to be back playing if everything goes right. I will be trying my hardest to bring another defender in. I need experience - I need to bring somebody in who has played in the league - but that is easier said than done."

Nottingham Forest's record signing Joao Carvalho is close to a return from injury according to the club's head coach Sabri Lamouchi. Lamouchi said: "It is good news for him and good news for us. He will travel with us (to London) so it is very soon that he will come back in the pitch with the first team. I hope before the international break (Carvalho returns) because it's so long for him and so long for us, but for sure we don't want to take a risk with an important player for us. It is good put him in at the right time."

Veteran Hibernian centre-back Darren McGregor has been ruled out for several weeks with an abdominal injury.

Bury Problems Deepen

The EFL have suspended a 6th match of the season amid frustration at a lack of progress with receiving the required financial guarantees that the club can see out the season. Worse news followed as it was revealed that current owner Steve Dale, who clearly cannot cope with the club financially, has rejected an offer for the club. Bury have been booted out of the League Cup for the season and are close to being expelled from the English Football League as well, while Dale is hanging on for a better offer. Just to prove how close it is to Bury's future being finalised, the EFL have finalised their plan for a season without Bury, which would mean League One being played with 23 teams and just 3 teams being relegated at the end of the season.

Sturridge In Turkey For Move

Former England striker Daniel Sturridge, who was released by Liverpool at the end of last season, has travelled to Turkey to finalise a transfer to Trabzonspor. The 29 year old spent 6 years with Liverpool, making just 160 appearances in that time as injury plagued him.

Lennon Makes Clyde Debut Aged 50

50 year old Clyde manager Danny Lennon, who officially retired from playing 11 years ago, brought himself off the bench in a Glasgow Cup match versus Celtic's colts team to help clinch a 3-1 win. Up against an opposition of teenagers he decided a second-half cameo appearance was needed. Still time for me to make it then in the game, as I am a lot (well ok maybe not a lot) younger than Lennon. Anyone got Danny Lennon's number?

Free agent 'defender' Ashley Williams has been left out of the Wales squad by manager Ryan Giggs as they prepare for a two games next month.

Bullying Investigation Leads To MacDonald Leaving

Aston Villa have concluded their investigation into head of football development Kevin MacDonald, who they twice appointed as caretaker manager, even as recently as last season, and the former midfielder has left the club. A Villa statement gave few details: "An investigation, carried out by barrister Jack Mitchell, has now concluded and the results delivered to the board. As the report forms part of an employee disciplinary process, the club is unable to provide details in public although copies of Mr Mitchell's investigation have been provided to the FA, Premier League and statutory authorities. Mr Mitchell appealed for individuals to come forward to give evidence and we are especially grateful to those former players who assisted him in his investigation. Our approach to safeguarding is now unrecognisable from the past." But, revealingly, they also stated: "Aston Villa wishes to apologise to all former players who were affected by behaviour which would not be tolerated by the club today." It was alleged by former Republic of Ireland international Gareth Farrelly that MacDonald was "incredibly aggressive, with constant verbal and physical bullying".

MLS To Expand To St Louis

Major League Soccer's plans to expand to 30 teams has taken another step forward with the addition of a team to be based in St Louis, which will be joining in 2022. MLS chief Don Garber said: "St Louis is a city with a rich soccer tradition. It is a market we have considered since the league's inception. It is with great pride we welcome St Louis." The ownership group will be led by members of the family which founded car rental group Enterprise and their president, Carolyn Kindle Betz (is she the first woman to be named after an e-reader?) said: "It's an incredible feeling to now be able to say St Louis is home to the first official majority female-led ownership group in MLS. Our MLS team and stadium will only add to St Louis' renaissance currently underway and will provide us with a great opportunity to bring together many different segments of the community, uniting people in their love for the game."

Miami Site Contaminated

David Beckham's MLS franchise, the stupidly named Inter Miami, has hit problems after their proposed stadium site was found to be contaminated by arsenic levels more than twice the legal limit. Barium and lead levels also exceeded legal limits on the site, which used to be a waste site for incinerator ash. The contamination was bad enough for a local golf course to be immediately shut down by the city council.
