Managerial Changes

Leam Richardson has been confirmed as permanent boss of Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal. Richardson was appointed as caretaker after John Sheridan walked out in November to take charge of Swindon Town and lifted the strugglers out of the League One relegation places.

Disciplinary Charges

Bristol City's Henri Lansbury has had his red card and subsequent one-match ban rescinded. The 30 year old former Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa midfielder was shown a red for deliberate handball but replays showed that the ball hit the crossbar and not his hand.

Russian match official Sergey Lapochkin has been banned from all football-related activity for 90 days by UEFA. He was found in breach of article 11(2)(a): Member associations and clubs, as well as their players, officials and members, and
all persons assigned by UEFA to exercise a function, must respect the Laws of the Game, as well as UEFA's Statutes, regulations, directives and decisions, and comply with the principles of ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship.

d. who does not immediately and voluntarily inform UEFA if approached in connection with activities aimed at influencing in an unlawful or undue manner the course and/or result of a match or competition

ESL Round Up

In an attempt to lessen the ire surrounding the announcement of Manchester United's involvement in the European Super League, it was announced that the inept Edward Woodward was coming to the end of his time as executive vice-chairman. Woodward was heavily involved in the planning of the proposed ESL and was already a figure of much derision in football circles before this. He became the first to fall on his sword, sort of anyway as he is not exactly rushing out of the door, instead he will be leaving at the end of the year. It was a move that had been planned anyway, but the announcement was made early in a weak attempt to mollify fans.

Insincere 'apologies' were issued by Manchester United and Liverpool's ownership, following initial statements that were only worried about the effect on key stakeholders. The public backlash saw both Joel Glazer and John Henry leap on camera to pretend they gave a flying fudge about the fans, despite making no attempt to engage with them over the creation of the ESL. Sadly, there will be some people that will fall for it.

Following on from the English clubs announcing their pull-out from the ESL, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid also followed suit.

Chief ESL architect Andrea Agnelli has admitted the proposed project cannot proceed as nine of the twelve teams have pulled out. Just Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid have yet to concede defeat.

Schalke Players Egged On To Relegation

Following Schalke 04's dreadful season led to relegation being confirmed following their 21st league defeat of the season, the players return home saw them met by protesting fans. As many as 600 fans were there to meet the team bus as it returned to Schalke's stadium early on Wednesday, with fireworks and flares going off. As the players got off the bus they were pelted with eggs and verbal abuse from the fans. Schalke, who regularly host home gates of 60,000, were Bundesliga runners-up as recently as 2018.
