Contracts

Cincinnati of the MLS have given goalkeeper Ben Lundt a deal until the end of the year.

Racing Strasbourg midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde has signed a new contract which will expire in 2024.

Nicolo Barella has signed up with Inter Milan until 2026.

Forest Green Rovers have given centre-back Jordan Moore-Taylor a contract running until 2023.

Transfers

Major League Soccer is set for a new transfer record in January when Thiago Almada completes a move to Atlanta United from Velez Sarsfield. Atlanta have agreed a fee of around $15m + add ons for the 20-year-old Argentine starlet.

Free agent former Sunderland defender Lamine Kone has signed for Lausanne-Sport of the Swiss Super League.

Chicago Fire are set for a rebuild after announcing 7 players contract options will not be exercised meaning that Roberto Beric, Francisco Calvo, Elliot Collier, Kenneth Kronholm, Alvaro Medran, Nick Slonina and Like Stojanovic will all be released at the end of the year. Also two more players will not be receiving new contracts, which will see Johan Kappelhof and Bobby Shuttleworth also become free agents at the end of the year.

Watford have announced a deal to sign Nigerian international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye from Sparta Rotterdam for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old will sign on 1 January 2022 but then immediately return to Rotterdam for a loan until the end of the season.

Injury Round-Up

West Bromwich Albion defender Kean Bryan has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee.

Cardiff City striker James Collins has pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad with an injury. Ireland have called up Callum O'Dowda to replace him.

Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw are out of the England squad, Shaw due to concussion, despite being allowed to play on in the Manchester derby while clearly concussed. Also out is Chelsea's Mason Mount, who is having surgery on his wisdom teeth. Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse is also missing from the squad at the moment due to illness. England manager Gareth Southgate has called up Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe as cover.

France and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has suffered a thigh injury in training which has ruled him out of France's World Cup qualifiers.

Managerial Changes

Newcastle United have appointed Eddie Howe as their new manager thanks to his stellar achievements of spending tens of millions to turn Bournemouth from a League Two side into a Premier League side and then back into a Championship side. Howe, who claimed Burnley was too far north for him to cope with during a spell destroying them financially, should be in his element with almost unlimited funds to waste, which probably explains why Amanda Staveley said: "He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here."

Mark Sampson, the man booted by England women for "inappropriate and unacceptable" behaviour with female players, has resigned from his role as Stevenage's first-team coach. Stevenage are currently 21st in League Two.

Middlesbrough have turned to former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder to replace Neil Warnock, who left the club on Saturday by 'mutual consent'. At the same time as Boro announced Warnock leaving, he was giving post-match interviews and explaining that the club had phoned him at 10am to tell him that he was "leaving the club today". So maybe mutual is a loose term for what happened! Alan Knill, a Wales' assistant coach, will be linking up with Wilder once more at Boro on the coaching staff.

Genoa have appointed Andriy Shevchenko as their new head coach. The 45-year-old former Ukraine head coach is replacing Davide Ballardini, who was sacked on Saturday. Genoa are currently 18th in Serie A with just one win in their 12 league games played.

Disciplinary Charges

Derby County's appeal against their 12-point deduction for going into administration, after years of escaping punishment for ignoring FFP rules, has been adjourned.

Millwall are trying to identify a supporter who is alleged to have subjected a member of Derby County's first team playing squad to discriminatory abuse.

St Mirren's chairman John Needham has been charged by the Scottish FA over a series of tweets he made regarding Rangers fans, which included hoping a bridge would tip over while crowded with them and using a banned sectarian term to describe them.

Saint-Etienne have accused potential buyer Prince Norodom Ravichak of fraud and forgery over his attempt to buy the club. Club president Bernard Caiazzo told Radio Free Asia that a 100m euro bank guarantee that the Cambodian had presented in support of his attempt to buy the French football club was a forgery, "It took some time to figure out, but in the end, all the specialists said this document was a fake document. It's completely crazy. He sent this document from a big bank, I can't say which. It was a foreign bank but one of the top three in its country." Suspicions were aroused when the signature of the bank's representative on the guarantee belonged to an individual who had not been working for the bank for several years. Ravichak, who is a nephew of Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni, will now face charges "for acts of forgery, use of forgery and attempted fraud", according to Saint-Etienne.

England To Trial Standing

Bizarrely English football is set to begin a trial return of standing in football grounds in a game involving Liverpool, as the first match in the trial is Chelsea versus Liverpool on 2nd January at Stamford Bridge. It does seem an insensitive choice as it was the loss of 97 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough that originally resulted in a ban on standing at football grounds in England. Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Cardiff City are also set to be part of the trial.

Couts Denies Refusal To Be Sub

Barcelona flop Philippe Coutinho has denied that he refused to come on in place of the injured Ansu Fati at half-time on Saturday. Coutinho had been asked to go and warm up ready to be brought on by interim head coach Sergi Barjuan but Alejandro Balde came on instead of the Brazilian at half-time. Since then rumours have swirled that Coutinho refused to come on or that Barjuan changed his mind because of Coutinho's attitude when asked to warm up. Coutinho told a press conference while away with Brazil on international duty: "I was very surprised when I saw the news because in all my career I have never been unprofessional, they can look wherever I went, I always respected everyone. Journalists always believe a lot of things." Which seems a very bizarre and downright untrue rebuttal, as he ended his time at Liverpool faking a back injury to avoid playing, which always mysteriously cleared up while away on international duty...
