Saints, the EFL, and the spying fallout

Southampton supporters are left weighing up a worrying spying allegation, the EFL’s muddled process, and what fair punishment might look like. The key point remains whether the play-off tie’s integrity stands.

I have taken some time to think about the last week. Not that anything I say matters or will have an impact, however.

First off, there is no evidence we have done this before. My gut says this is idiocy from one person, either the "spy" or the person who sent him. If it is deeper than that, we should be thrown out of the play-offs. But there are then issues around the 72 hour rule and such like. We'd fight it hard if we knew it wasn't sinister, but our lack of communication denying it is worrying.

The EFL has created a mess

Second, the EFL are idiots. Leeds did this, they introduced a rule, but didn't add in what the punishment was for breaking that rule. So here we are, a week out from the biggest game of the season, and they don't know what to do.

Also, surely doing a Leeds and spying mid-season is worse as there are more matches to potentially influence? Hence why, if we are serial offenders, throw the book at us.

Why the semi-final still felt decided on the pitch

But despite all of that, whatever this guy did, the integrity of the semi-final I don't think is in any doubt. Boro dominated the home match but couldn't score. They should've won 2/3-0, and that's their fault. If we were so good at spying, wouldn't we have won?

At St Mary's, it was an epic game, two teams fighting tooth and nail, decided ultimately by a moment of luck, and that's football. Neither side were playing like it didn't matter or might be overturned. On the night, and over the course of the tie, Saints deserved it. Southampton vs Hull is the correct match to be played to decide the play-off winners.

What punishment fits, and who misses out?

That's why I think being thrown out, provided this is a one-off, is off the table. It would take too long to sort, appeal, and re-appeal to ensure the play-offs can be validated.

If we are serial offenders, the problem for the EFL is that Boro and Millwall have been knocked out, so there would be no final, and it's right that Hull go straight up. They won't want that, but they also can't reinstate a team that has been knocked out, so another screw up on their part.

In my heart I am thinking maybe this run was too good to be true. Have we been cheating? If so, I'd want a heavy fine, potentially a points deduction, and maybe auto-relegation to League 1 for next season.

But based on what we know, if it was just this one time, we clearly didn't gain an advantage, it was just stupidity, and I'd expect a heavy fine and or a small points deduction to be applied next season. The main thing the EFL will want is to stage a play-off final, in which case we have to be in it on sporting merit. If we've cheated, the only team to reach the final undefeated and fairly is Hull.

Saints and the league have been absolute idiots. Boro have milked this for all it's worth and some of their behaviour on Tuesday was appalling, as was some of ours, but they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory.

I feel most sorry for Hull. Maybe they would introduce a promotion and relegation play-off between Hull and West Ham or Spurs instead, who knows.
