A Supporter’s Premier League End-of-Season Awards

One fan’s end-of-season Premier League awards pick out Iraola and Bournemouth for standout work, while Liverpool’s campaign is labelled a major let-down amid frustration with management and direction.

Here are my end of season Premier League awards, and to be honest they say as much about what I have enjoyed as they do about what has done my head in. There is one standout for me, and it is hard to look past him given what his side have managed to put together.

Manager and team of the season

Manager of the season is Iraola. I was in the Keith Andrews camp two months ago, but now unbeaten in 18 games, it has to be this man. Their last defeat was 3 January, losing 1-2 to Arsenal at home, and nobody is talking about this run. Imagine if that was Slot, we would never hear the end of it.

We had that run earlier in the season but delivered some dour performances and rode our luck. They have since won at Arsenal and Newcastle, and beaten Liverpool and drawn with Manchester City. They lost so many key players and did not miss a beat. Arguably, they are better than last season.

Team of the season is Bournemouth. After losing so many players, I had Brentford, but I cannot see past Bournemouth. They also lost a ton of quality players, but Iraola rolled up his sleeves and did not miss a beat.

Worst team and worst manager

Worst team of the season is Tottenham. Thank goodness for them, otherwise I would have gone with us. Tons of injuries, yes, but toxic from the top down and it shows on the pitch. Still in with a chance of relegation this weekend which says it all. The only reason I do not want them to go down is that it will make Arsenal fans even more happy.

Worst manager of the season is Arne Slot. Hands down. I cannot see anyone even coming close to this selection. A good few managers (Wolves, Spurs, Forest) have come and gone and would provide some level of competition had Slot been sacked when he should have been, which was back in November.

Given a Championship-winning side and a war-chest that we wished upon Klopp for many a season, we should have won this league a month ago. Stubborn, clueless, arrogant, excuse-ridden, tactically inept, poor man-manager, he wins this award at a canter.

Most improved and worst to watch

Most improved team for me is Manchester United. They were down with Spurs last season and have turned things around. They finally got a solid keeper in Lammens who is looking like a future star.

Worst team to watch is a toss-up between Liverpool and Arsenal. The award goes to them for all the time wasting and gamesmanship they have taken to another level in this league. They are a team that will not be remembered for flowing football, but for blatant dark arts.

Imagine watching the highlights reel of their season’s goals: corners and free kicks, with the occasional good team goal.

Liverpool’s disappointment and the manager wish

Most disappointing team is Liverpool. From champions to a poor show, on and off the pitch. The excuses from the manager, the lack of leadership from above, the tactical ineptness, the lack of application from so-called top players. Rotten from the top down and I cannot wait for the season to end.

City are also disappointing given their unlimited resources, squad quality and depth.

Manager I would like to see at Liverpool is Iraola. For me, Iraola is Premier League proven and plays the sort of football we all crave and want to see next season. If he does end up at Palace, we can look forward to some difficult days there in the seasons ahead, as can the rest of the league.
