Will William Nylander Leave The Toronto Maple Leafs?

Many of us feel that if the Toronto Maple Leafs don't at least win a couple rounds this year in the playoffs that big changes will be made. Whether that be a new GM, President, trading of one of the big 4 or even all of the above, is not known for sure. We speculate.

One speculation is that if a big 4 goes, it is likely William Nylander. With only 1 year left on his deal and likely wanting a good sized raise, he would make sense to move as the return should still be quite good and open up some cap space.

This got me to thinking about Willy's overall game this year. Hard for many to argue that this hasn't been his most competitive season. He is on pace for career highs in offensive categories, he seems to be competing harder and Keefe has even had him out late in close games to protect leads where he used to be stapled to the bench.

Does possible inevitable change have something to do with Willy's commitment this season? Did management give him an ultimatum to be more committed or else, so to speak? Are we seeing the best of Willy because he feels he finally has no choice or he may be moved to a city he may not be happy about?

This isn't a Sandin situation where it was pretty obvious Sandin was not happy in regards to a lack of playing time. The Leafs have given Willy every opportunity to be successful and put up with his lack of competitiveness for years. Nylander is playing like a guy that wants to stay. Previously, was that a migraine issue OR just an attitude issue? Is he giving his all now because he can sign an extension this summer? Why are we seeing a different Nylander?

Willy was always a guy that leaves you wanting more. This season, is the first season in his 7 full seasons as a Leaf where he is doing what many thought he could if he just competed harder, which he has done this season. It is funny how all seems to be forgiven now by many. Is 1 out of 7 seasons of competitiveness enough to say Willy has changed and also, again, why this season?

Personally, I think the migraine issues played a part in his inconsistency, but I think there is more to it. I think Willy saw the writing on the wall if he didn't change. Add to that he has a new contract being played for, gives added motivation.

I am not convinced this is the new Nylander. I would need to see at least back to back seasons of this. That said, I am happy the Leafs are benefitting from whatever finally has Willy more motivated.
