Football News: My Assessment On Chelsea This Season
My very brief assessment on Chelsea's latest Premier League season is as follows:
For me we had just ONE stand out player and that was our POS, Caicedo. Cucarella was very good and Palmer had a very good start followed by a very average period by his standards. I think Fernandez was our most improved player followed by Chalaboa.
A few players that finished the season very strong were Colwill, Tosin, Sanchez, James, Noni and Neto. I would keep Sancho and I unfortunately would give up on Mudryk. Jackson remains a marmite player, who can be unplayable one week and then look a total novice the next week, but he always works hard and makes his markers work hard.
The SD's in my opinion have got a few signings wrong, but that was always likely given how many players we have signed. I do have a few issues with the ownership, but I have to admit that they have rolled the dice with player investment.
Enzo Maresca (EM) was my third choice to become our manager. Putting aside we had one poster calling for him to be sacked pre-season, he then went on to prove his worth with a very bright start to the season. Our first 15/16 games were very good results wise and I also enjoyed the football. We then had a slump that brought about a huge change in people's opinions.
The last 6-8 games we performed ok, but with the exception of the home game against Liverpool. It wasn't outstanding football, but it was pragmatic and we got the required results. Overall, I would rate EM's first season as a 7/10. I never called for him to be sacked and I was also pretty sure he would start next season as our manager.
Regardless of what happens tomorrow, I hope he is our manager next season. I think he also represented himself and the club in a very professional manner. I predicted 3rd-5th as our finishing position and I suppose I should feel smug that we finished 4th, but in truth I feel we missed an opportunity because with the exception of Liverpool, this year the English Premier League has in my opinion been bang average.
Every Chelsea supporter will expect us to improve our league position next season, but I don't see that as a given and will leave my prediction for next season until this window shuts.
