Football News: How Much Can Manchester United Sell The Players For?
The club wants to sell a lot of players. However, many buying clubs will likely want to wait until the 1st of July to shift spending to the next year of accounts and to have the final COVID impacted year drop off of any FFP / PSR calculations. So it makes sense that they start making contact over the next week or so to start trying to put deals into place.
The problem for Manchester United is that it isn't as simple as selling a player for X amount and add that to same amount to the transfer kitty. Many players still have their original transfer fee / associated costs still to be amortised in our accounts. Meaning we have to sell for above that figure to make any profit. If we sell for below that figure, then it counts as a loss and actually reduces the amount we can spend on players and wages.
Players like Rashford and Garnacho do not have any amortisation to account for as they are former academy players. While some other players such as Shaw also no longer have any fees to amortise as they have been here longer than their original contract.
Sancho needs to be sold for more than 18m for us to break even. If we sold him for 18m that would add NOTHING to any potential transfer spending. If we sold him for 25m then it would add 7m to our potential transfer kitty.
Antony needs to be sold for 35m to breakeven. Casemiro for 17m, Mount for around 36m, Højlund for around 40m.
That means we could sell Sancho for 18m, Casemiro for 17m, Antony for 35m, Mount for 36m and Højlund for 40m. That would mean instead of having 146m raised to buy replacements, we would have exactly zero to spend on replacements.
That is why the club won't just sell everyone for whatever they can get. Some players they will be prepared to let go for the breakeven cost to get them off the wage bill and free up space, even though that leaves them nothing to replace them with. Others it's not worth letting them go for the breakeven amount as they would have to be replaced, and that funding would have to come from elsewhere.
For that reason players like Mount and possibly Casemiro won't leave this summer unless someone comes in with a big offer. We all want Onana to leave, but his breakeven price is around 30m. And there probably isn't any clubs prepared to pay that much for him. On top of that even if we did sell him for 30m, we would then have nothing to buy his replacement with and we absolutely would need to buy a replacement.
This is why the club will accept lower fees than fans will be happy with for Rashford and Garnacho as all of the money counts as profit and can be reused to strengthen the squad. While I'd argue that Rashford should be worth 45-50m, I expect a deal to be done for closer to 35m maybe less to get him off the books and bring in some profit. Likewise Garnacho should be worth around the same 45-50m, yet will likely go for less than 40m.
Beyond those two I do see the club raising any significant funds to go into buying new players. Most other departures will be around their breakeven price and will be going to clear space in the squad and lower the wage bill.
We will be lucky to raise 80-100m in total for all our sales this summer. The only chance of that being different was if Bruno accepted a move to Saudi, which he didn't. We just don't have anyone else who has no amortisation left on their signing who we can sell for a significant fee. Maybe Mainoo if pushed, or a decent 15-20m fee for Collyer if someone offered that much for him (although I'd like to see him kept for another season as he's the ideal profile for Amorim and would need replacing if sold due to low numbers in midfield).
