Everton Need January Reinforcements to Salvage the Season

Not heard the David Moyes presser yet, but I can already guess what's coming - something along the lines of: 'Sunderland have just beaten a European side in Chelsea,' or 'They're one of the form teams in the Premier League,' or even 'Not many sides will take points off them at the Stadium of Light this season.'

Let's be honest, though - that's just noise.

This isn't a 'Moyes out' piece by any means. Moyes is still a better manager than Sean Dyche in my view, mostly for off-the-pitch reasons. The real question is: who's actually available that would be the right appointment? Because this idea floating around about Everton having a great start to the season is just nonsense. Better than last season under Dyche, sure - but great? Not even close.

The Matches That Tell the Real Story

Leeds United - One of the worst Everton performances I've ever seen.

Brighton - Extremely lucky to win. Brighton should've been out of sight before Ndiaye even scored.

Wolves - We did our absolute best to throw that one away.

Aston Villa - At the time, the most out-of-form team in the league, hadn't scored a goal all season. We could've played for 900 minutes and still not found the net.

Liverpool - Handed them the game in the first half. People rave about our second half, but that's only because they got complacent at 2-0 and coasted.

West Ham - As bad as Villa's form. They didn't have a single point all season until we came along.

Crystal Palace - Should've been two or three up. The last 30 minutes showed effort, but not enough.

Manchester City - Comfortable. No real complaints, they're just better.

Spurs - Gifted them the game as well.

Other than Wolves (first half) and Palace (second half), we've been average at best.

Sunderland and the Bigger Picture

There's no way Sunderland's squad should be anywhere near ours in terms of ability or experience. Even our poorest players should be matching them - and that's not arrogance, it's just reality.

Other than Xhaka and Traore, none of their players have any Premier League experience. We've got Pickford, Mykolenko, Tarkowski, Keane, Garner, Gana, and Grealish - all of whom have played plenty of top-flight football.

So yes, Sunderland might have started brilliantly, but this was still a terrible result for us.

We're toothless, fragile, and mentally weak - summed up perfectly by Barry's miss and Alcaraz dawdling on the ball when we had a 2-on-1 at the end.

What Next?

At this point, I just want to get to January. Hopefully the Friedkins run Everton's winter window like they did with Roma - with purpose, intelligence, and urgency.

We desperately need a couple of players who can change the entire complexion of this team, because right now, it's the same old story: plenty of talk, very little belief, and an Everton side that's far too easy to play against.
